Sderot’s Netivim Center

The deteriorating security situation and the failing economy in Sderot have caused many of Sderot’s young adults to leave the city.  Those who stubbornly stay discover that finding work and continuing their education are difficult challenges.  In many cases, frustration breaks their resolve and they join their peers who have moved to other cities, usually closer to the center of Israel.

Netivim Center was established to help young adults fulfill their potential in Sderot.  The Center supports young adults ages 18-35 who are unemployed or did not complete their education, and has outreach activities to attract more young people to Sderot, targeting young adults who have recently completed their army service, immigrants, single mothers and more.

The Center links young adults with local employers and institutions for higher education in the area and offers career counseling, occupational testing, English and computer lessons, help finding scholarships, help improving study habits, preparation for psychometric and matriculation exams, and more.  The Center also takes a part in helping members integrate socially into Sderot’s community and is responsible for placing scholarship recipients in volunteer positions.

The security crisis makes it difficult for young people to visit the Center on a regular basis. In 2008 we hope to see the Center renovated to protect it from rocket attacks so it may better serve the residents of Sderot.
