Star Children Club – “Yelday Ha Kokhav”
All children need social activities but disabled children often have difficulty fitting into normative social frameworks. In 2000, a group of parents of children with various disabilities established a social club called “Star Children Club.” Today, 15 children (ages 6-13) come to the Star Children Club four afternoons a week to participate in social activities.
Although the Club is located in a bomb shelter, for the children it is a warm and loving home, with a therapeutic atmosphere that empowers them to develop. In line with Gvanim’s value of empowering people with disabilities, the Club staff includes an adult with disabilities who acts as guide and mentor for the children.
Every child has a personal program at the Star Children Club, to fit his or her abilities and needs. Club activities include zoo-therapy, learning sign language (children and staff), rehabilitative sports, activities in Sderot’s Extreme Sports Center, arts and crafts and more.
Gvanim thanks its Program Partners: the National Insurance Institute, the Ministry of Social Services/Dept of Rehabilitation and Services for the Developmentally Disabled, the Municipality of Sderot, the Shalem Foundation
