Hadar School

Children with severe disabilities and retardation who need continuous care are very dependent on their surroundings and caretakers.  They can neither feed themselves nor communicate well.  These children need constant and close supervision in a rehabilitative, therapeutic framework.

The Hadar school was founded in 2000 to meet this need for families in Sderot and the surrounding Northern Negev region. Today 40 children between the ages of six and 21 are enrolled in Hadar.  A personal study plan is defined for every child to meet a wide variety of developmental and scholastic needs.  Our goal is to help them progress developmentally and to improve the quality of their lives.

The children attend school six days every week, until 6pm.  Morning activities are under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, while afternoon activities are provided by Gvanim Association on behalf of Sderot Municipality’s Department of Social Services.

Hadar school is not large enough nor well enough equipped to answer the needs of the students. A concentrated effort is now in progress to build a new wing for Hadar School.  The additional space is required to increase the number of classrooms, decrease crowding and enable increased enrollment.   In the summer of 2007, Hadar School was renovated to provide full protection from Kasam rocket fire.  However, the parking area and entrance to the school are still unprotected, and several times the students have been outside and exposed during sirens and rocket attacks.  Because most of them are severely physically disabled and in wheel chairs, these moments are traumatic for both students and attending school staff.
