Birth to Parenting Center

Last Update:11.10.2010

Many young families in Sderot have difficulty purchasing basic products for their children. In many cases, these families are in need of parental guidance and help navigating institutions that offer support and assistance.

The “Birth to Parenting” Center was established by Gvanim and Reuth in order to answer this need by offering these families material and emotional support. Today over 100 families from Sderot have been helped by the Center’s services. These services enable families to purchase basic necessities: diapers, formula, beds, strollers, toys, clothing and more, for a symbolic amount. The Center’s staff also directs parents to other sources of assistance for Sderot families with young children. In addition, some of the families who received help in the past from the Center now volunteer at the “Birth to Parenting” Center helping other parents.

The program "Mother's Nest" developed from the Center's activities. The program aims to mentor and support mothers of young children through volunteerism from the community in order to strengthen parental and family units and improve family's abilities to deal with crises and stress. The program is run by volunteers who undergo 3-month training, and at the conclusion of the training, each volunteer is paired with a mother. The support and mentorship element includes weekly meetings of 1.5 hours, during which time mothers receive guidance and advice relevant to their needs.

The target audience for this program is mothers and young families coping with financial and familial difficulties and with difficulties raising and educating their children.
